In the last edition I spoke about some blue skies and warmer weather finally hitting the UK, and not much has changed in that aspect as I am currently writing this following a record May for high temperatures throughout the UK. Although it may be a cliché to always talk about the weather, it’s incredibly relevant to sign-makers and wide-format printers which may see business boosted by an increase in outdoor events and advertising. Visiting FESPA in Barcelona this year was an example of the warmer weather and of forming different perspectives in an industry going through rapid and exciting change. The Spanish location meant not only seeing a different market, but also a new vibrancy to FESPA, which in turn give the speciality print and signage industries a new vibrancy too. Navigating the show and the rest of Barcelona reminded me of the different work hours that are done by those in Spain, especially for anyone who works outdoors. If the UK continues to get hotter seasons, many here might advocate for the same change! Overall, the trip was a great experience, with lots of takeaways for the future of print and signage. If you want to hear my full reaction to FESPA, along with my colleague Jonathan Pert, then go check out the latest episode of The Print Monthly Podcast, available on our sister publication’s YouTube channel, or on all major podcast platforms. When it comes to this edition of SignLink, there’s plenty to read when basking in the sun, or shielding from the inevitable rain and storms, all of which show the diversity and vibrancy of the industry. In the news (pages 6 to 19) we cover a variety of different stories, from the loss of an industry titan to some of the features you can expect to see at this year’s Sign Show at the NEC in Birmingham this September. On top of that we have in depth features about vehicle wrapping, LED signage, training and entry points into the industry, and a fresh perspective from Verity Fox from Dominion, who discusses the changing nature and expectations of print (page 28). Enjoy, and I'll catch you in the next one!
