Hello and welcome to Print Monthly September/October! Has it been a year already? That’s right, The Print Show is back for its tenth edition, this time taking place in Hall 1 of the NEC in Birmingham, giving plenty of room for the biggest show yet. Fittingly this also a jam-packed edition as we have lots of useful and interesting articles to not only get you ready for The Print Show but also give food for thought ahead of any teams talks or networking opportunities. While this is a great chance to preview everything we’ll be doing at this year’s show and what you can expect in this edition of Print Monthly, I first must mention the man that started all of this. Print Monthly was founded under Link Publishing which was formed in 1992 by Page Tuck who started the publication as Repro Link which provided a valuable resource for the industry to seek services and equipment. The publication later evolved into Print Monthly as it’s known today, having established itself as a well-known and far-reaching title for the print industry. At the beginning of the year Print Monthly (along with SignLink) was acquired by Koru Media, which would start the transition of Page retiring and moving onto pastures new. This past month saw Page officially start his retirement which led to staff at Print Monthly past and present getting together to celebrate his career and everything he started. Like all editors before me, as well as those in attendance at the celebration, we would likely not be working in this industry if it were not for Page – so on behalf of all staff new and old I’d like to thank Page for his dedication and hard work in making the brands of Link Publishing what they are today. Good luck in your retirement and new ventures Page! Speaking about new chapters, this edition is filled with new content and insight into how the industry is changing. This edition’s news is also filled with stories of acquisitions, purchases, and events that showcase the best of the industry. Giving his thoughts on the power of print is Mark Stephenson in his new column – The Gospel According to Mark (page 61). On page 58 Rachael Hunt gives her insight into the social media ban set to affect not only how young people consume media, but also how brands market their products. On top of this we of course have previews of all things Print Show, alongside our usual features about hardware, software, and business advice. Happy reading and see you at the show! Through the initiative, SMEs in the print, graphics, and signage sectors have been able to invest in digital technologies designed to boost productivity, create new jobs, and strengthen competitiveness with support from Made Smarter. Companies that have recently received Made Smarter grants includes Cumbria-based Firpress Printers, which secured a £20,000 Made Smarter grant towards a £40,000 investment in cloud-based management information system, PrintIQ. The PrintIQ technology brings quoting, production, scheduling, inventory and customer communications into a single platform. Firpress has credited the software with improved efficiency, increased production capacity, and the creation of three new jobs at the company. In Greater Manchester, PP Graphics invested £46,000 in a customer portal and systems integration project supported by a £20,000 Made Smarter grant. The new software will help to automate artwork approval, streamline customer communications, and improve scheduling, while reportedly creating a new job and upskilling nine existing employees. Identity Printing, also based in Greater Manchester, invested £45,000 in a new Resolute DTF UV Faux embroidery system supported by another £20,000 Made Smarter grant. The investment will enable the garment print specialist to expand its product range, improve production efficiency, and create three new jobs while upskilling two existing members of staff. Business development director at Identity Printing, Leo Stanley, says: “Working with Made Smarter has been a really positive experience. The support has helped us invest in new technology that will make a real difference to the way we operate as a business. It allows us to expand our product range improve efficiency, and offer our customers something more innovative within garment decoration.” Those wishing to apply for Made Smarter grants must be a small- or medium-sized manufacturing enterprise in England with fewer than 250 employees. Applicants can register online via the Made Smarter platform or their regional delivery body to receive a business assessment and digital roadmap. After assessment, applicants can pitch a project plan to access up to 50% match-funded grants for capital investment and specialist advice, with a maximum amount of £20,000. By Jonathan Pert Firpress Printers used a Made Smarter grant to invest in cloud-based management system, PrintIQ BPIF Print Outlook reveals worst output balance since Covid The latest BPIF Printing Outlook survey has revealed a downturn in the UK print market for Q2 of 2026, in large part due to political uncertainties and the conflict in the Middle East. The data from the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF) depicts an industry suffering from a concentrated period of cost increases that have necessitated price rises, but not to the degree required to protect cash flow, margins, or profits. Over two-fifths (42%) of printers surveyed experienced a decrease in their output levels in the second quarter of 2026. Less than two-fifths (37%) were able to hold output steady, while the remaining 21% achieved an increase in their output levels. The difference between positive and negative responses was therefore -21, a long way below the result of -2 in Q1 2026, and just below the Q2 forecast of -18. This outcome is the most negative output balance reported for six years, when output was restrained by the Covid-19 shutdown. However, the Outlook survey predicts that the impact on all costs is not expected to be severely prolonged, with a recovery expected for Q3. According to the survey, output growth is expected to increase for 33% of companies, with a balance of +7 forecasted. The Outlook revealed that industry confidence was strongly negative in Q2 but has not sunk to the depths feared when the Q2 forecast was made in April. Confidence in the general state of trade improved for just over one-tenth (11%) of respondents in Q2, while for 60% it remained the same. The remaining 29% reported that the general state of trade had deteriorated in Q2. Sales levels was selected by 55% of respondents as one of their top five business concerns, up from 33% in April. Worries over the level of profits that are being generated has moved up the ranking to become the second ranked concern in July, selected by 39% of respondents, up from 32% in April. Competitor pricing levels remains the third ranked business concern, this time with a 34% share of respondents selecting it. Despite remaining third in ranking, fewer selected it as a concern than in April, January, and last October when it had a 53% share. Global unrest follows behind with a reduced 32% share in July, down from 58% inApril. Kyle Jardine, BPIF economist, says: “Companies have referenced confidence being hit by uncertainty, leading to delays in purchasing decisions and investments. Most costs have increased by similar amounts in a short period of time – but not all have been passed on as price increases.” Charles Jarrold, BPIF chief executive, adds: “Some persistent and common gripes remain; lack of investment support, an increasing regulatory burden, more obstacles in trading with the EU, recruiting difficulties, damaging effects of minimum wage increases, and inconsistencies in business rates – to list a few. “We do of course voice such concerns in our regular representations to government; we’ll find out more about the direction the new prime minister will take in the next few weeks and months.” By Jonathan Pert BPIF economist Kyle Jardine [pictured] highlights that the industry is expecting to recover in the second half of 2026

Mo Salah and Andy Robertson will both be moving on to pastures new after playing major roles in the club’s most successful period in modern history. To celebrate their time with Liverpool, LEGACY commissioned two exclusive commemorative books, created in collaboration with the players’ families. Just 20 copies of each edition were produced, while the books were privately distributed to those closest to the players. Pureprint produced the super-limited edition runs in-house, with both books documenting the matches, celebrations, and milestones in which Salah and Robertson were part of over their ten years with the club. Print experts create custom prosthetic leg Print experts from the University of West England (UWE) in Bristol have developed an eye-catching solution for a bride-to-be by creating a bespoke covering for her prosthetic leg to match her wedding outfit. Staff from the Centre for Print Research (CFPR) designed the unique patterned covering after being approached by Gabrielle Couch, who sought help for her daughter Shannon. After considering the wedding dress and its colour scheme, the team produced the personalised wrap-around covering by screen printing a colour blend of oranges and pinks onto a thin pink Japanese tissue substrate. The print was created by scanning a portion of the lace from Shannon’s dress, using photo editing to create a repeat pattern, and applying pattern-cutting techniques so the paper appeared to be ‘tattooed’ to the surface. Once the design was produced, the tissue was applied to the surface of the plain white leg cover and protected with a matt varnish. By Jonathan Pert Mo Salah won three Premier League Golden Boots during his time with Liverpool By Rob Fletcher The design was created by scanning a portion of the lace from the bride-tobe’s dress New ‘Print Tomorrow’ scheme launched A new industry initiative has been launched which aims to broaden access to careers across the UK print, communications, and visual media sectors. Print Tomorrow, founded by Elizabeth Bowerman, will seek to help print and its associated industries attract, develop, and retain a more diverse range of talent, with the aim of ensuring that it remains equipped for future growth. The initiative will focus on raising awareness of modern careers in print and communications, while supporting outreach activities in education, government, and communities. It will also aim to promote opportunities for career changers and underrepresented groups while facilitating mentoring, networking, and industry engagement. Bowerman was previously a founder of Young People in Print (YPIP), an initiative set up to help the industry promote itself as a career choice for young people. The organisation has since been renamed to Young People in Print & Packaging (YPIPP), with the name changed to better represent its commitment to the UK packaging industry. The Print Tomorrow initiative was established in response to the employment challenges facing many print-associated businesses, with the organisation feeling that “while print has transformed dramatically in recent years, awareness of the career opportunities it offers has not kept pace.” Print Tomorrow argues that the modern print industry extends beyond the traditional roles associated with it, now encompassing data, automation, digital communications, creative services, and emerging technologies. However, they believe that many are unaware of the breadth of opportunities available, resulting in a talent pipeline that does not reflect the diversity of roles available. Bowerman adds: “By bringing together businesses, educators, and industry professionals, we can help open the door to a wider and more diverse talent pool. This isn’t just about attracting more people into print – it’s about ensuring the industry reflects the communities and customers it serves while securing the skills it needs for the future.” The initiative has invited organisations and individuals across the industry to get involved. Businesses can support the programme through outreach activities, mentoring, work experience opportunities, apprenticeships, advocacy, and collaboration. Industry professionals have also been encouraged to share their experiences online to help inspire the next generation of talent. Printwise purchased by Empine Blackpool-based small- and wide-format printer, MCB Print (trading as Printwise), has been acquired by Empine and its print director and co-founder, Alex Forsyth. The sale took place following the announcement that Printwise founder, Mark Booth, would retire after more than two decades at the helm of the business. The purchase price of the acquisition has not been disclosed. Founded by Booth in 2002, Printwise has served a wide range of clients predominantly in Blackpool and across the Fylde coast. The acquisition will reportedly result in no immediate changes for customers, with operations continuing as normal and the business still trading as Printwise. Previous designer at Printwise, Andy Makin, will step up to lead the office on a day-to-day basis, with support from the core executive leaders guiding the Empine Group – Anthony Taylor, Jacob Knowles, and Alex Forsyth. This is the second acquisition made by Taylor and Knowles in the last 12 months, following the purchase of the family-owned commercial printer, Forsyth and Steele – another Blackpool based production facility where Forsyth serves as managing director. Restore Information Management acquires MPS UK document solutions provider, Restore Information Management, has acquired the Bristol-based print and mail service business, MPS Marketing Services, in a £2.3m deal which will help diversify its outbound communications capabilities. Founded in 2007, MPS covers print, fulfilment, and outbound mail distribution company, specialising in data-driven transactional mail solutions, high-volume direct mail, and bespoke software integration for secure communication tracking. The acquisition is part of a broader strategy to strengthen Restore’s services for a growing customer base in the public sector. The combined business will aim to provide improved support for local authority, NHS, and other public sector clients managing high-volume communications across physical and digital channels, including the delivery of letters, bills, benefits communications, patient letters, and other critical documents. There is concrete evidence that the UK public sector is maintaining and committing to high print volumes, with the UK government shifting towards centralised, securely managed print environments and hybrid physicalto-digital workflows. In September 2025, the Crown Commercial Service (CCS) awarded a new four-year procurement framework valued at up to £900m, designed to provide more innovative working practices through improved print and document management infrastructure. A centralised “GovPrint” service managed by the Government Property Agency (GPA) has also seen surging demand, expanding to support over 11,000 civil service users. The agency is actively rolling out GovPrint across 1,300 multi-function devices across the UK estate, including major HMRC hubs in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Bristol, and Nottingham. Document management companies like Restore are specifically buying up outbound mail businesses including MPS to capture revenue generated by these growing public sector transactional print requirements. Restore currently supports over 6,000 clients across the UK, providing data management, digital transformation, and physical document storage as well as scanning, mailroom, and outbound communication services. 12 email: editor@printmonthly.co.uk September | October 2026 - Issue 362 Durst Group has acquired a majority stake in Triple C Labs, the company behind industrial print-focused software offering CoCoCo Platform. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, though Durst did confirm that CoCoCo Platform will continue to operate as an independent entity under its existing brand, leadership and customer commitments. CoCoCo Platform will also remain fully open to third-party OEMs, software vendors and print production customers, with Durst adding that the deal represents a “targeted reinforcement” of its Kyveris industrial software and AI stack for connected print production. Durst says while Kyveris provides the physics, colour and orchestration intelligence that turns installed presses into “data-driven production environments”, CoCoCo Platform will contribute the “horizontal integration layer” that completes the picture. Christoph Gamper, chief executive officer and co-owner of Durst, says that combining Kyveris and CoCoCo Platform will “close the gap” between what a machine does and what a production floor knows. Karl Ciz, co-founder of CoCoCo Platform and Triple C Labs, adds: “While we are excited to reinforce Durst’s Kyveris stack with our data fabric, we remain truly agnostic and vendor-neutral. This investment doesn’t restrict us, but rather accelerates our roadmap, allowing us to scale the CoCoCo Platform and reach many more third-party OEMs, software vendors, and PSPs worldwide.” UK-based print, design, and fulfilment provider, Page Bros Group, has acquired card publisher, Green Pebble, in order to bring an established print and creative partnership into closer alignment. The acquisition formalises a longstanding relationship between the companies, combining an over 200-year-old UK print business with an artist-led publisher. Green Pebble had previously worked with Page Bros as a manufacturing partner to handle the printing and production of its greeting cards and stationery. According to Page Bros’ chief executive officer, Alex Tuya, the deal is as much about shared values as strategic opportunity. Route 1 Print installs UK first SCREEN Truepress JET 560HDX Route 1 Print has become the first UK company to install the SCREEN Truepress JET 560HDX digital inkjet printer, in response to a growing demand for shorter print runs with tighter deadlines. Route 1, the trade arm of parent company Bluetree Group, produces thousands of jobs daily for print resellers across the UK, supporting them from a 300,000sq ft production facility. Its output includes a variety of commercial print products including flyers, leaflets, business cards, and booklets for resale. The recently launched press was purchased after Route 1 saw demand shift to smaller quantities that needed to be supplied on shorter notice at competitive prices. The company is an existing SCREEN commercial printing partner, already operating two Truepress JET 520HD inkjet presses. Shorter print runs, custom quantities, and faster turnaround times are all in rising demand in the UK print landscape due to an increase in ecommerce resellers, with a consumer base more used to on-demand customisation that expects orders to be delivered quickly or even next-day. Commenting on these shifting demands, Adam Carnell, chief executive officer at Route 1 Print, says: “The trade print market has changed considerably. Our reseller clients and their customers expect greater flexibility with the same consistent high-quality from our printing services. “When we considered our next press investment, we needed a solution that could meet that pace of change while continuing to offer them products that not only match but continue to exceed our own high standards.” The Truepress JET 560HDX offers 1,200dpi resolution printheads, with maximum speeds of 150m/min. It is designed to produce output visually indistinguishable from offset print, powered by SCREEN’s Truepress SC2 ink set that can print directly onto standard offset-coated stocks without primer. The JET 560HDX also supports printing both barcodes and 2D matrix codes, which are readable by a variety of finishing equipment. These codes allow inline finishing equipment to be configured automatically with individual job parameters for a variety of applications. These can also be reconfigured across different continuously printed jobs which are fed on a single reel from the press, without operator intervention. The Truepress JET 560HDX is also integrated inline with a Digital Fluid Applicator (DFA) and a Contour Web Coater, which have been developed to protect print vibrancy and ensure that substrates remain stable throughout downstream finishing without impacting press productivity. Joseph Towler, chief executive officer at Zenith Print Group, says: “Our customers expect us to react quickly and adapt to changing demands. Whether in the context of a commercial print job or of packaging production, they rely on us for fast turnaround times and maximum flexibility. The new Speedmaster XL 106 gives us the agility to switch efficiently between these two business areas, helping us respond faster and better meet our customers’ needs.” Prior to its latest investment, Zenith had already taken steps to enhance its prepress capability with the installation of two new HEIDELBERG Suprasetter devices. Both Suprasetter systems are configured with compact pallet loaders, which can load up to 1,200 printing plates and reduce manual handling in order to enable more efficient and automated plate production. With this investment, Zenith’s prepress department will be prepared to support the increased print capacity and speed of the new XL 106. Zenith Print Group’s investment also extends into postpress, with the purchase of the latest HEIDELBERG Stahlfolder TH82-P equipped with StackStar C robotics. The system combines high-output shingled folding with automated robotic stacking, providing additional automation and flexibility across Zenith’s finishing operation. By Jonathan Pert Zenith’s latest offset press combines five printing units with an integrated sheet perfecting device and an inline coating unit KennedySmith doubles production output UK-based carton manufacturer and packaging printer, KennedySmith, has reported a significant boost in efficiency following investment in a Koenig & Bauer Rapida 106 press. Based in Ayrshire, Scotland, KennedySmith serves a range of packaging markets including food and pharmaceutical applications, specialising in solid board carton packaging. The purchase of the Koenig & Bauer press is part of a wider technology investment designed to ensure operational flexibility and dependable performance for fast-moving market requirements. KennedySmith has estimated that it can now achieve the same production output in three shifts that previously required six, thanks to the Rapida’s advanced automation features. Following its installation, the company’s energy bill for the first quarter of 2026 was also reduced by 26% compared with the same period last year. The Rapida 106 is designed for high-performance medium-format sheetfed offset printing, with its features focusing on fast makeready times, advanced automation, and more consistent print quality. Before making its investment decision, KennedySmith undertook a broad review of available technologies including digital and flexo options. Following print trials at various facilities, the company selected the Rapida 106 platform for its automation capabilities and overall production capacity. Third Titanium 2516 cutter purchase for two separate Nottingham printers International Graphic Supplies (IGS) has marked a new milestone with two of its longest-standing clients, with commercial printers Hickling & Squires and Sherwood Universal each taking delivery of their third Titanium 2516 digital cutter. The companies, which are both based in Nottingham, have long-standing partnerships with IGS, utilising the company’s Titanium cutting table range with the aim of driving productivity, maintaining rapid turnaround times, and scaling operations in response to increasing demand across the wide-format signage and packaging markets. IGS, a supplier of industrial digital printing and cutting solutions for the sign and manufacturing industry, offers a variety of cutters under its Titanium brand, offering features such as automated cutting, high-speed operation, and simplified software controls. For both businesses, part of the decision to continue investing in Titanium technology came down to its ability to allow for continuous production across more complex substrates like corrugated board, acrylics, and display materials. Hickling & Squires also recently completed the UK’s first installation of a Konica Minolta AccurioJet 30000 inkjet press, as part of the company’s long-term print strategy. ThreeFiveFour chose the 2017 model of the CX 102-5+L, remarketed and supplied directly by HEIDELBERG through its remarketed equipment programme. The investment will reportedly double the company’s printing capacity through the efficiency improvements it provides. The 2017 generation remains highly sought after in the used equipment market, offering five printing units and a dedicated coating unit with an anilox roller system. The press boasts a maximum production speed of 16,500 sheets per hour, with maximum sheet size of 720mm × 1,020mm. The installation marks a major milestone in ThreeFiveFour’s growth strategy, allowing the business to scale output without proportionally increasing labour or production time. The company has outlined that the new press allows customers to benefit from cheaper pricing, speedier production, and greater capacity. HEIDELBERG’s remarketed equipment programme is designed to give customers access to expertly refurbished pre-owned presses, backed directly by the manufacturer. Although ThreeFiveFour had previously explored pre-owned equipment through dealers, the complexity and sophistication of the CX 102-5+L made them decide that direct manufacturer support was a critical factor in the purchasing decision. The Imaging Centre invests in B2 HP Indigo Family-run greeting card producer, The Imaging Centre, has expanded its production capabilities with the installation of a HP Indigo 18K digital press, giving the business additional capacity and helping it keep pace with a growing need for print-on-demand (POD) greeting cards. The latest investment in the HP Indigo 18K Digital Press builds on the company’s earlier move into B2 digital production, with the aim of increasing productivity and reducing downtime to help the business respond more quickly to customer needs. As these demands have continued to evolve, more work is now being produced on the company’s B2 platform than its SRA3 presses. This transition has already transformed the scale of work the business can undertake, increasing its largest individual order from 20,000 greeting cards to 280,000 cards. UKfirstasKomoriG837PAdvance EX installed at Selsey Press Selsey Press, a third-generation family printing business in West Sussex, has become the first company in the UK to install the Komori G837P Advance EX Edition with Autopilot technology. Following several weeks of installation, testing, and fine-tuning, the new offset press is now fully operational and reportedly delivering significant improvements in speed, quality control, and production efficiency. The multi-million-pound investment increases the company’s production capacity for customers across the UK including businesses, charities, design agencies, print management companies, and trade partners. The Komori G837P Advance EX Edition is an eight-colour convertible perfecting offset printing press designed for double-sided commercial printing. The new press, which was first announced globally at drupa 2024, features advanced automation technology capable of monitoring print quality in real time, which is designed to reduce waste, improve consistency, and increase productivity. The Autopilot system checks every printed sheet for colour and compares each sheet to the customers artwork file, with the installation representing the first time such a technology was installed in the UK. SRA1 sheets can be printed on both sides at 15,000 sheets per hour, equating to 240,000 A4 pages per hour, enabling Selsey Press to produce larger and more complex print projects at greater efficiency. Selsey Press operates with a strong commitment to sustainable printing practices, using FSC-certified papers with recycled content wherever possible, as well as renewable energy generated through on-site solar panels. The new press aims to further support these ambitions through improved efficiency, reduced waste, and lower energy consumption per printed page. Robin Tyler, director at Selsey Press, says: “Print continues to play a vital role in helping organisations communicate, engage, and inspire. By investing in the latest technology, we’re ensuring that our customers benefit from exceptional quality, faster turnaround times, and a more sustainable production process.” The Komori G837P Advance EX Edition features advanced automation technology capable of monitoring print quality in real time By Jonathan Pert By Jonathan Pert [L to R] Jamie Sone, machine operator, and Ian Drew managing director of ThreeFiveFour, with the newly purchased Speedmaster By Jonathan Pert The HP Indigo 18K was purchase by The Imaging Centre to increase productivity and reduce downtime

Soyang introduces new paper-based DTF film Soyang Europe, a manufacturer and distributor of wide-format equipment and media, has expanded its direct-tofilm (DTF) range with the launch of a paper-based transfer media, which aims to offer a more environmentally conscious alternative to conventional PET transfer film. The new single-sided release-coated transfer paper, named Soyang DTF Paper, features anti-static treatment and a hot-peel release. Designed for use with digital inkjet DTF printers running water-based pigment inks, the media can be recycled through standard paper waste streams, with the aim of helping print businesses reduce plastic waste. Developed to work seamlessly with existing DTF production environments, Soyang DTF Paper reportedly delivers the same transfer performance and print results of conventional media. The material is OEKO-TEX certified, confirming it has been independently tested against internationally recognised standards for harmful substances. Available in 60cm x 100m rolls, Soyang DTF Paper is suited to applications including personalised garments, workwear, sportswear, and promotional clothing. European paper production in decline according to report The Confederation of European Paper Industries (Cepi) has released its 2025 Key Statistics Report, highlighting a slow but continued decline in paper and board production – despite its significant contribution to Europe’s circular economy and climate goals. According to the report, overall paper and board production in Europe declined by 1.6% in 2025, reaching 77.4 million tonnes. Cepi believes that this reflects “a continued correction after the post-pandemic surge,” rather than a return to stable growth. While market pulp production grew by 1.0%, this represents a strategic but relatively small proportion of the sector’s overall production. According to Cepi, early signals from 2026 point to continued weakening for the sector, with output already down 2.4% in the first quarter compared to the same period in 2025. The decline comes despite European pulp and paper producers’ strong sustainability performance. Pulp and paper producers reduced specific CO2 emissions by 10.2% in 2025, continues to operate what Cepi calls “the world’s most effective recycling system”, and sources an all-time high 92% of its wood and nearly all of its recycled material from Europe. While the organisation found that overall demand has only slightly eroded, the figures show a number of notable structural shifts. For example, while production of packaging grades remained stable, there was a significant contraction for cartonboard (-5.4%) while graphic papers declined sharply (-7.3%). Excluding graphic papers, European production was relatively stable in 2025, but still 7.0% below the record levels of 2021. Cepi believes that this reflects an intensifying global competition, with impacts worsened by a difficult geopolitical context. Paper industry consultant, EMGE, recently warned that significant paper overcapacity in China is driving a surge in low-cost exports, potentially placing downward pressure on prices and prompting calls for protective trade measures in key markets. Paper producers worldwide have raised prices in lockstep in 2026, highlighting issues including electricity and natural gas price rises, as well as a general rise in the cost of paper pulp. Many companies also point to an especially competitive market and the impacts of global events including the recent conflict in the Middle East, with the sum of all the factors creating a ‘perfect storm’ of unprecedented operating costs for paper manufacturers.
