In the last edition I spoke about some blue skies and warmer weather finally hitting the UK, and not much has changed in that aspect as I am currently writing this following a record May for high temperatures throughout the UK. Although it may be a cliché to always talk about the weather, it’s incredibly relevant to sign-makers and wide-format printers which may see business boosted by an increase in outdoor events and advertising. Visiting FESPA in Barcelona this year was an example of the warmer weather and of forming different perspectives in an industry going through rapid and exciting change. The Spanish location meant not only seeing a different market, but also a new vibrancy to FESPA, which in turn give the speciality print and signage industries a new vibrancy too. Navigating the show and the rest of Barcelona reminded me of the different work hours that are done by those in Spain, especially for anyone who works outdoors. If the UK continues to get hotter seasons, many here might advocate for the same change! Overall, the trip was a great experience, with lots of takeaways for the future of print and signage. If you want to hear my full reaction to FESPA, along with my colleague Jonathan Pert, then go check out the latest episode of The Print Monthly Podcast, available on our sister publication’s YouTube channel, or on all major podcast platforms. When it comes to this edition of SignLink, there’s plenty to read when basking in the sun, or shielding from the inevitable rain and storms, all of which show the diversity and vibrancy of the industry. In the news (pages 6 to 19) we cover a variety of different stories, from the loss of an industry titan to some of the features you can expect to see at this year’s Sign Show at the NEC in Birmingham this September. On top of that we have in depth features about vehicle wrapping, LED signage, training and entry points into the industry, and a fresh perspective from Verity Fox from Dominion, who discusses the changing nature and expectations of print (page 28). Enjoy, and I'll catch you in the next one! SignLink SignLinkMagazine printmonthly_signlink 6 email: editor@signlink.co.uk Issue 265 - June | July INDUSTRY | NEWS Ellis Signs bounces back after devastating fire Pets in Print 2026 winner revealed Local shop receives apology, 15 years after its sign was stolen Outcry after Cumbria businesses told to remove signage UK sign-maker, Ellis Signs, has reported an extraordinary recovery weeks after its facility was ravaged by fire. Emergency services attended Patterson Street in Blaydon at 4am on March 25th, where a fire broke out at the Ellis Signs factory and office, destroying a significant portion of the facility. While nobody was physically harmed by the fire, reports stated that the blaze partially destroyed both the interior and the building’s roof. A spokesperson for the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service reported that five pumping appliances were in attendance along with specialist vehicles. The news garnered a significant response on social media, with many professionals in the signage industry offering their sympathies and help to Ellis Signs. Businesses including RMC Digital Print, Doghouse Installations, and Graffiti Design all offered their services regarding any signage work or projects. Following on from the fire, the Ellis Sign team worked tirelessly to rebuild its operations, find new facilities to operate from, and minimise the impact to its customers and clients. The company is now working from new offices alongside a new factory space. Two weeks after the blaze, Ellis Signs managed to bring its production back on track and continue serving its clients with their signage needs. Gus the dog has won the third annual Pets in Print competition, held by material supplier, Innotech Digital and Display. This year's judging panel included Gail Coles from The Dogs Trust, which Innotech partnered with to raise over £500 for in the month of March with donations via orders over £150. Coles judged the competition alongside Colin Sinclair McDermott, the Online Print Coach, Jack Gocher and Kathryn Ridout fromEye on Display, andCarys Evans from Karis Copp Media. Announcing the winner, Innotech highlighted Gus’ role as production assistant, saying that he gets involved in a range of activities from artwork monitoring to the aforementioned forklift supervision, all of which he does with the now signature Pets in Print bandana which is supplied to entrants of the competition. “The judges particularly noted his dexterity and versatility at work while still posing beautifully,” says Tony Murgatroyd, regional sales manager for Innotech. Exotica Foods supermarket in Swansea received an anonymous apology and £100 in cash for the theft of a temporary PVC banner – which was stolen 15 years ago. The letter, sent by “a former foolish student”, was sent by a person who said they had stolen the sign after a night of drinking. As of the date of writing, the identity of the former signage thief remains a mystery. One of the only clues is that the letter was postmarked in West Yorkshire. While the £100 received goes "nowhere near the cost” of replacing the temporary sign, which cost about £1,200 not including installation, Imran Ashraf, owner of Exotica Foods, says that the money will go towards a custom gazebo for outside his shop so that “we can start doing some cooking videos this summer". Business owners at an industrial estate in Workington, Cumbria, have voiced concerns after being ordered to remove outdoor advertising signage from their units. The companies based at the Buddle Road section of the Clay Flatts industrial estate have received letters from their landlord, Northern Trust, stating that their signage would be removed to be replaced with more ‘uniform’ signage. Many of the businesses raised concerns about the money they already spent on the signage, the impact that the signage removal will have on their trade, and what they see as unequal treatment. Northern Trust says that it is fully funding the new signage installations themselves, as part of a rebranding programme. One of the affected businesses, CHP Supplies, claims that larger national companies at the estate including Toolstation and Howdens Joinery have not had letters about their signage. Some of the occupants have reportedly asked Northern Trust to be moved on to the same contracts as these national companies, however, they were told this would not be possible. The shop owner hopes to discover the identity of the former signage thief, saying “it would be quite funny” Ellis Signs was able to find a new production facility mere days after the fire [Pictured] Gus from Big Art and Banners with his Pets in Print trophy By Jonathan Pert By David Osgar By Jonathan Pert

Developed for businesses producing signage, retail displays, exhibitions, and interior panels, the EU2-1000MF is designed to remove the complexity of traditional roll-to-roll print, laminate, and mount workflows. Workflow simplification is at the core of the build philosophy of the EU21000MF, with the direct-to-board UV flatbed removing multiple production stages associated with roll printing, laminating, and mounting. Supporting media sizes up to 1,220×2,440mm and materials up to 95mm thick, the EU21000MF can accommodates a wide range of rigid substrates, making it suitable for both established flatbed users and screen printers transitioning to digital production. The press is also built with a new high-definition printhead, which reportedly allows the EU2-1000MF to deliver approximately 1.5 times higher productivity than the previous EU-1000MF, while maintaining expected image quality and operational approachability. Despite this performance increase, pricing for the press remains unchanged from that outgoing model. Roland also recently announced a new global brand refresh, as part of a shift in focus to becoming a complete solutions provider of hardware, software, supplies, and service. ROLLSROLLER, a Swedish manufacturer of flatbed applicators, has announced the launch of its new product line, ROLLSROLLER SLIM, which is designed to make professional application technology more accessible. ROLLSROLLER SLIM aims to address a gap in the market by allowing for the graphics mounting, lamination, and pre-masking capabilities of other industrial-grade applicator models, but at a more affordable price point. While positioned as an entry-level solution, SLIM inherits the essential performance characteristics of the company’s flagship models including stable and rigid construction, a controlled workflow, ergonomic operation, and compatibility with a wide range of media and substrates. The result is a machine designed to enable sign shops, wrap professionals, and print providers to step into professional flatbed application with confidence. Mimaki Europe, a manufacturer of industrial inkjet printers and cutting plotters, has announced the new UJV200-160 and UJV200-130 which make up the JV200 series of UV roll-to-roll printers which was showcased for the first time in EMEA at FESPA Global Print Expo 2026 in Barcelona. The new UJV200160 was previewed at an exclusive media event on March 30th, 2026, at Mimaki’s regional headquarters in the Netherlands. During the event Mimaki talked about how it was helping printers and sign-makers diversify their offerings and offer more than traditional print and signage by expanding into areas like bespoke products with synthetic leather, and carpet and walls for exhibition stands. This led to the discussion of the Mimaki 200 Series which was first launched in September 2024, with the CJV200 solvent print and cut machine that then led to the JV200-160 and the TS200-1600 sublimation printer. The UJV200 is a roll-toroll UV printer and features MAPS4 technology for streak-free prints as well as variable dot technology for smooth gradients and solid colours. The press was highlighted by Evertse as one of the few printers, on the market that can produce skin tones without any grain, as well as solid colours and sharp fine lines. The printer’s Dot AdjustmentSystem(DAS2) has been implemented to enable automatic image quality adjustment with reduced setup time and media consumption. The printer’s UV technology also means the UJV200 utilises instant ink curing, which allows printers to be handled, finished, and installed immediately after production. The series also has white and clear inks so that three-layer printing can be achieved, on top of typical applications such as window graphics, backlit displays, labels, and decorative elements. The EU2-1000MF delivers approximately 1.5 times higher productivity than the previous model The SLIM provides ROLLSROLLER’s core technologies at a more affordable price point The UJV200-160 and UJV200-130 were showcased at this year’s FESPA Global Print Expo in Barcelona By Jonathan Pert By Jonathan Pert By David Osgar substrates. With its exhibition and entertainment print business reportedly expanding at pace, FaberExposize identified a gap in its fleet in the form of a lack of a dedicated 5m press that could handle multiple rolls simultaneously. Iain Clasper-Cotte, managing director at FaberExposize UK, explains: “We’ve been growing exponentially within exhibition and entertainment and many of our clients wanted 5m-wide prints as well as 3.2m. It was the only gap in our arsenal, and we wanted to fill it with a UV machine.” Capable of printing up to three rolls at once and reaching reported speeds of up to 672sq m/h, the Jeti Condor RTR5200 includes features such as clear fluid printing, high-opacity white ink, and in-line varnish designed to reduce the need for additional finishing. Clasper-Cotte continues: “We already have a lot of signage trade clients coming to us primarily for flags and smaller jobs, but this enables us to print the full remit of what a signage company might need. We can do flexface signage for instance, because we can put protective varnish over it.” The Condor was able to integrate into the company’s existing workflow, running on the same RIP system and requiring no new software. Within its first week on-site, the team was able to print three rolls on the press simultaneously. Wide-format print kit supplier, Quality Print Services (QPS), has announced the availability of the Vulcan Hybrid 1800, a newgeneration UV hybrid printer from manufacturer, ColorJet. QPS is the official distributor for ColorJet’s UV flatbed and soft signage printers in the UK, with the Vulcan Hybrid 1800 marking the latest addition to the range. With a maximum print width of 1.8m, the ColorJet Vulcan 1800 is engineered to address the rising demand for compact, versatile, and applicationdriven UV printing solutions. The new machine can print at speeds of up to 45sq m/hr in high production three-row CMYK mode. The Vulcan Hybrid 1800 is based around an advanced conveyor belt module designed to ensure smooth and stable handling of both flexible media and lightweight rigid boards up to 20mm thick. Additional features of the press include an ink level sensor to alert users to low ink ahead of time and on-board anti-crash and antistatic systems. Epson has announced the release of the SureColor SC-F20000, a new industrial dye-sublimation printer designed to help garment printers and other print service providers (PSPs) accelerate output while maintaining consistency. The SC-F20000 is also designed to support continuous printing with large-capacity 10L ink cartridges and automatic ‘Hot Swap’ ink switching capabilities. For operations running extended jobs and heavier media, Epson will also offer an optional Jumbo Roll solution, supporting highercapacity roll handling to suit demanding production schedules. The SC-F20000 has been calculated to offer print speeds of up to approximately 306sq m/h in fast settings, with a minimum resolution of 600dpi. UK display and graphics solutions provider, The Displayways Group, has completed a significant programme of investment and strategic development over the past 12 months. The Group has invested £1.1m in new production technology including the installation of a swissQprint Nyala 4, an EFI VUTEk M3h, a Mimaki JV330-160, and a Pirahna CNC routing machine. These investments are designed to complement the company’s existing wideformat printing and finishing factories and further strengthen its ability to deliver complex, high-quality visual solutions at scale. To support the installation of the Pirahna CNC, Displayways has also constructed a new dedicated production area at its South London headquarters with the aim of enhancing workflow efficiency and increasing overall production capacity. The Displayways Group provides visual consultancy, project management, and production services for signage, graphics, interiors, and live environments. Working in partnership with both creative agencies and brands, the company delivers visual projects across the UK and internationally. The Group has also expanded its strategic capabilities through the acquisition of graphic design provider, MGK Design, in December 2025. In a post on LinkedIn following her passing, William Smith said: “We are deeply saddened to share that our colleague and friend, Gill, has passed away this week. “Gill was part of William Smith for almost 40 years, joining at just 16. Over that time, she became not just a huge part of our business, but a well-known and respected figure across the wider industry. For many, Gill was the face of William Smith.” In a SignLink feature from 2022 about women in signage, Harrison spoke about how she joined the company as a school leaver after seeing an advertisement in her local newspaper. She began her signage story working in artwork, which included producing road traffic signs prior to digital printing. In its tribute, William Smith mentioned Harrison’s recent work as a trainer, where she shared her knowledge and helped develop many individuals entering the graphics and signage industries. Before that, Gill spent many years out on the road as an external account manager, building relationships and friendships with customers across her territory of the UK. The tribute from William Smith continues: “As a highly skilled professional in the sign industry, Gill was also a strong female figure. Her expertise in wrapping and deep product knowledge helped to inspire and support many others through her training. “She was incredibly passionate about her role and about the industry itself, always wanting to help others, share her knowledge, and see people succeed. Nothing was ever too much trouble, and she had a way of making everyone feel supported and valued.” Many figures in the UK sign industry have responded with their memories of Harrison and the impact that her death has had on them. Angela Turpin, director at NE Display, said on Linkedin: “Gill was a strong female figure within the print and signage industry. She always shared a warm smile, especially for women breaking into the space, and she championed success at every opportunity. “Last year at the Vion anniversary event, she briefly spoke with humility about her health journey, yet you could still see the warrior behind her eyes. I really looked up to Gill, and I'm genuinely sad for the whole William Smith team and our industry to have lost her.” Durst Group has appointed Wolfgang Knotz as its new chief technology officer, as part of its goal to transform from a machine manufacturer to a technology-driven solutions provider. Aimed at higher-volume, industrial-style production, the machine can run at up to 117sq m/hr in colour in outdoor mode or 91sq m/hr in colour mode for indoor quality prints. Add in a maximum printing with of 3.2m and this opens up opportunities across a range of markets and applications such as wallcoverings and both indoor and outdoor display pieces. EVENTS - / NEWS “The introduction of the Latex FS70W to a UK audience is a key highlight, alongside deeper storytelling around white ink, rigid applications, and production efficiency,” Easton says. Among the other printers on display will be the HP Latex R530, the only compact all-in-one rigid and flexible machine within the HP Latex portfolio. The device can print at a top speed of 24sq m/hr in indoor mode and can run materials up to 1.6m wide and 5cm thick. It can also run a range of colours, including the popular white ink option. Also on display will be the HP Latex 630W Print and Cut and HP Latex 830W machines, which Easton says demonstrate high-impact colour, white ink capability and production efficiency. The HP Latex 630W has a top speed of 14sq m/hr in standard sixpass mode and can print on materials up to 1.63m, while the 830W is the faster of the two models at up to 36sq m/hr in outdoor mode, also with a maximum print width of 1.63m. In addition, aside from its leading hardware solutions, HP will invite visitors to learn about the HP PrintOS Production Hub and how this software can help simplify job management, improve visibility, and support smarter decision making for both print and sign businesses. “Together, these solutions reflect HP’s focus on scalable growth, from entry level expansion to industrial performance,” Easton says, adding: “Rather than novelty for novelty’s sake, HP’s focus is on showing what’s new in terms of capability, opportunity, and business impact.” HP Talks Up UK Shows Easton also addresses the role both The Print Show and The Sign Show have to play in the UK market. He says that UK-focused show play a “vital” role in the industry and create an environment that is “accessible, practical and directly relevant to local market conditions”. 17 www.signlink.co.uk Issue 265 - June | July 2026 “UK printers face specific challenges around labour, energy costs, sustainability expectations, and turnaround times,” he explains, continuing: “A national show allows those conversations to happen in context and enables suppliers like us to respond with solutions that make sense for the UK market, not just global trends.” On this, he talks up the benefits of co-locating the print- and signfocused events alongside each other, saying how as the boundaries between print disciplines continue to blur, many printers today operate across The aim is not just to show machines, but to show how those machines fit into modern print and sign businesses commercial print, signage, décor, packaging, and industrial applications. “A combined print and signage event reflects this reality,” he says, adding: “It encourages the cross-pollination of ideas, discovery of new applications and business diversification. For HP, it mirrors how HP Latex technology is used in the real world, enabling customers to move between applications without changing platforms, inks, or workflows. “The Sign Show and The Print Show are an opportunity for printers and sign companies to see technology running live, ask direct, practical questions and explore new business directions. “Visitors should come to the HP stand to see how versatility, productivity, and software integration come together in a way that supports real business growth. Whether they are looking to expand into new applications, improve operational efficiency, or simply stay competitive, HP’s stand will offer clear, actionable insights and not just hardware.” HP will invite visitors to learn about the HP PrintOS Production Hub

Roland DG has announced it will use The Sign Show 2026 to demonstrate new several new hardware solutions, while visitors will also be able to view other, established technologies from the manufacturer. One of many exhibitors returning for the second edition of The Sign Show, Roland DG will have a much larger presence at this year’s event. Based on stand S210 near the entrance to the hall, the manufacturer will be seeking to build on its success in year one and connect with more visitors this autumn. Attendees can expect to see a mixture of roll-to-roll print and cut machines and UV flatbed printers on the Roland DG stand, as well as several new models that have not yet been released to the market. In addition, visitors can gain insight into new software and workflow innovations, designed to boost productivity and creativity across both signage and print businesses. “After such a fantastic 2025 event, with incredible energy, strong attendance, and a real buzz across both shows, we’re genuinely excited to be coming back,” says Rob Goleniowski, regional general manager for the UK, Ireland, Scandinavia and Baltics at Roland DG, adding: “It’s a brilliant opportunity for us to reconnect with our customers, spend quality time with industry peers, and be right at the heart of such a dynamic and innovative sector. “We’re really looking forward to showcasing the latest innovations from Roland DG, while spending valuable face-to-face time with our customers and meeting plenty of new ones. It’s all about sharing ideas, exploring new applications, and helping businesses unlock fresh opportunities for growth, while, of course, supporting our own ambitions too.” Goleniowski also spoke about the importance of having shows dedicated to both the UK sign and print industries, setting out how The Sign Show and co-located The Print Show serve as key meeting points for the domestic markets. “The Print Show and The Sign Show are hugely important for the UK industry,” Goleniowski says, continuing: “Not everyone can attend major international events like FESPA, so having a high-calibre, accessible exhibition here in the UK is vital. “It gives print professionals and signmakers a chance to experience the latest innovations first-hand, speak directly with manufacturers, and leave inspired with new ideas to grow their businesses.” LKH Tools will exhibit at The Sign Show for the second consecutive year, with a focus again on connecting UK signage professionals with high-quality solutions. The company is the UK distributor for Crown Norge precision CNC routing tools, with visitors at this year’s show having the opportunity to see these products first hand. Commenting on the return, managing director Liam Hodson says that the company was able to generate a high number of quality leads at the first edition of the show, with its aim to build on this in the autumn. “We had a very good three days and met plenty of customers new and old,” Hodson says, adding: “It exceeded our expectations and the leads we took at the event were very good. We are now looking forward to the next show. “We feel that The Sign Show will expand into a major exhibition for both the sign and print industry, and we want to be a part of that. It’s a great show in a good central location and people should consider exhibiting and visiting for 2026.” Quality Print Services (QPS) has revealed it will switch from The Print Show to The Sign Show for the 2026 events as it seeks to capture wider interest in its wide-format print solutions. Based on stand 150, the company will showcase a range of products for this area of the print and sign sectors, including inks, media, printers and software. QPS is a long-term supporter of The Print Show and was in attendance at the event last year. However, moving across the hall to The Sign Show – and in a more central location – means the company will be able to connect with its key audience across both the print and signage markets. Since last year’s show, QPS has added several new machines to its extensive line-up of wide-format print products. Among these is the Vulcan Hybrid 1800, a new-generation UV hybrid printer from ColorJet. The new model can print at speeds of up to 45sq m/hr in high production three-row CMYK mode. Built around an advanced conveyor belt, the machine ensures smooth and stable handling of both flexible media and lightweight rigid boards up to 20mm thick. The Print Show and The Sign Show are “vibrant” events that are “critical” for the UK market, according to leading manufacturer Epson, which recently signed up to exhibit at the 2026 event. While a long-term supporter of The Print Show, Epson will switch to The Sign Show section of the hall for the 2026 event, with the aim of capturing attention from visitors to both shows. As was the case in 2025, The Sign Show and The Print Show will again run as co-located events, offering visitors with interests across both the sign and print markets to view the latest in both sectors. Epson is one of many exhibitors that will benefit from this approach, with its solutions in place in many print and sign companies across the UK. Phil McMullin, head of sales for commercial and industrial at Epson UK, says the co-location presents the manufacturer with the ideal opportunity to connect with a wide range of existing and new customers. “The Epson print offering is a very broad church these days, encompassing a wide range of print applications including market leading signage printers,” McMullin says, adding:. “We needed more floor space to show off new products and chose a stand effectively straddling the two shows. “Digital technology has blurred so many lines in the print industry that we don’t really see these shows as separate.” McMullin went on to say that exhibitions like The Print Show and The Sign Show are the best opportunity for industry members to view the latest solutions in-person. With this in mind, he said anyone with interests in print or sign should view this year’s co-located events as a must-attend. “We believe Epson print quality is the best on offer, so we want potential customers to see our printers in production,” McMullin says, continuing: “UK printers and sign-makers typically do not travel in numbers to European shows, so it’s critically important to have a vibrant and relevant, UK-based tradeshow. “We also believe that there is only space for one expo to showcase the UK print and sign industry. If you are in the business of making signs or print to sell, then The Print Show and The Sign Show provide an opportunity to investigate new profitable revenue streams and keep up to date with technology.” Chris Davies, event director of The Print Show and The Sign Show, adds: “We’re delighted to welcome Epson back to the events for 2026 and particularly excited to see the company expand its presence across both shows. Epson remains one of the leading names in print technology and its support further highlights the value of bringing the print and sign industries together under one roof.” By Rob Fletcher Epson hails The Sign Show as a 'critical' event for the UK print and signage market Epson hails The Sign Show as a 'critical' event for the UK print and signage market Just weeks after exhibiting at the inaugural edition of The Sign Show in 2025, IPL Leeds Ltd signed up to return this year, with the aim of building on the success and connections it made during its debut. A specialist in POS & POP, internal and external signage, print, vinyl graphic and wallpaper installations, IPL will return the NEC after a busy few days at last year’s event – where it captured plenty of attention on its eye-catching stand. In 2025, IPL featured several, large superhero cutouts across its stand, two of which allowed visitors to poke their head through and take on the persona for themselves. The idea of this was to showcase its wide range of services to customers across both events – an approach that proved successful after the company reported a high number of leads. “What an incredible week we had at The Sign Show and The Print Show,” IPL said in the wake of last year’s show, adding: “We had the time of our lives seeing breath-taking stands, meeting up with colleagues old and new, and having some incredible conversations. Colyer, a specialist partner for print and digital technology requirements, has signed up to exhibit at The Sign Show in 2026, moving across the hall from its traditional position in The Print Show. Operating out of locations in Woking and London, Colyer support its customers across print equipment, software, media, inks and office consumables. After a successful outing at The Print Show in 2025, it is aiming to replicate the engagement it experienced by connecting with a wider range of visitors from signage backgrounds. “Our mission is to be at the forefront of innovation while keeping it customer-friendly and eco-conscious,” Colyer says, adding: “Our awesome team is all about helping customers and stakeholders succeed, delivering sustainable solutions and good vibes.” By Rob Fletcher IPL aims to build on ‘incredible’ debut show Colyer set for innovative showcase IPL Leeds caught the attention of visitors with its unusual stand in 2025 Colyer will be positioned at the centre of Hall 1 By Rob Fletcher EVENTS - / NEWS 19 www.signlink.co.uk Issue 265 - June | July 2026
