Just like the many summer festivals, holidays, and events taking place across the UK, this edition is fully packed thanks to the myriad of news, opinions, and features we have lined up. One significant reason for the bigger edition is this year marks the second outing of The Sign Show following its successful launch last year. After attracting over 5,000 visitors last year across both The Sign Show, and the co-locating Print Show, both events will welcome visitors from across signage, print, and their associated industries. Last year was a fantastic opportunity for the team here at SignLink to showcase all that we offer our followers, and the industry as a whole, as we got the chance to undertake three days of fascinating talks and interviews on the Print Monthly and SignLink stand. This year will be no different and will be the perfect chance to chat to many industry professionals, and report live from the show floor via LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, and the recently launched Print Monthly Podcast. As well as several pages of show news, there's plenty in this edition which will be useful before and after the show. In the Sign Show Preview, Rob Fletcher gives an overview of all the features and major exhibitors present on this year's show floor. Over in Adventures in Sign Painting (page 51), Sam Roberts has a nice show tie-in with an interview with David Mearns, who talks all about his history in the industry ahead of his return to Traditional Sign-Making Masterclass at this year’s exhibition. Elsewhere in this edition’s Fresh Perspectives (page 47), Molly Jackson, who made a big impression at last year’s Sign Show – appearing across multiple panels, podcasts, and interviews – talks about about her experience in the industry and the importance of nurturing young talent in print and signage. Along with all of this we of course have our usual selection of features and specials, deep diving into advice and knowledge that can help you in the world signage and wideformat print, before or after The Sign Show. So, happy reading, and I hope to see you at this year’s show! The AA marks 120 years since historic first road sign AA Signs, the signage division of the Automobile Association (AA), is marking 120 years since its first road sign was erected in Hatfield, Hertfordshire. AA Signs began in 1906, a year after The AA was founded. The organisation began erecting village signs as local councils did not consider it their responsibility at the time, with its first AA sign erected in Hatfield to show the place name and mileages to nearby towns including St Albans. By 1939, around 30,000 AA signs had been erected, before most were removed at the outbreak of the Second World War to prevent them being used by enemy forces for navigation in the event of an invasion. Afterthewar, responsibility for road signage moved to local authorities, causing AA Signs to shift its signage output. Today, it supports major public events, state occasions, and sporting fixtures including Glastonbury, The Open Golf, Royal Ascot, the London Olympics, and Wimbledon. The Big Print Network sees major expansion with host of new members The Big Print Network (TBPN), a newly-launched ambassador programme for wide- and superwideformat printers and sign-makers, has seen a host of recent signups, representing a cross-section of the UK industry. Launched by media and hardware supplier, Innotech, earlier this year, TBPN gives carefully selected print businesses a ‘first sight’ of new Innotech products before they reach the wider market. FASTSIGNS Leicester North has become the latest member of TBPN, after meeting Innotech at a recent FASTSIGNS convention. Membership to TBPN will provide the newly launched Leicester signage franchise with early access to Innotech products, exclusive promotions, and marketing support, in exchange for championing Innotech materials to its customer base. Print provider, The Bracknell Print Room, became the inaugural member of TBPN, a company which has been operating since 1977 and is now in its third generation of family ownership. Imagink also recently become a member of TBPN, joining the likes of exhibition and display specialist, Time 2 Display, and retail graphics provider, Swytch Graphics. BSGA calls on industry to shape new BS 559-2 specification The British Sign and Graphics Association (BSGA) has released a new draft specification for public consultation, which is intended to support good practice throughout the operational lifecycle of interior and exterior signage. The specification, titled ‘BS 559-2 Interior and exterior signs - Part 2: Inspection and maintenance’, aims to work toward the development of a British standard for the inspection, maintenance, and ongoing management of sign assets. The standard is designed to promote greater consistency, clearer responsibilities, and improved safety outcomes across the industry, particularly in relation to long-term asset management and the ongoing management of sign assets. BS 559-2 forms part of the wider BS 559 series, with BS 559-1 addressing specification, design, and installation, and Part 2 focusing on inspection, maintenance, and ongoing asset management. The BSGA has played a key role throughout the development of the standard, with representatives contributing technical expertise to ensure the guidance reflects current industry practice and supports practical application across the sector. The public consultation provides an opportunity for members of the industry community and wider stakeholders to review the draft and submit comments before it is finalised. The BSGA hopes that this will include sign-makers, installers, specifiers, architects, facility managers, local authorities, and building owners. Following publication, the BSGA will continue to support members with guidance, briefings, and practical resources to assist understanding and implementation of the guidance and recommendations contained within the standard. Before joining the franchise-based signage firm, Wani spent five years scaling a dual-territory franchise business in the frozen food sector. He also brings with him experience managing major infrastructure projects for industry titans like Balfour Beatty, Siemens, and prominent engineering firms across the Middle East. Based on Kings Norton Trading Estate, FASTSIGNS Solihull will mainly focus on the education, healthcare, construction, and commercial landscape across Solihull, South Birmingham, Redditch, Longbridge, and and Worcester. By Rob Fletcher CMYUK announces new strategic deal with Eddie Tucker Wide-format kit supplier, CMYUK, has announced a new strategic partnership with Eddie Tucker, managing director of Liyu England, collaborating with Tucker’s company to offer CMYUK’s range of products to its existing customer base. Under the agreement, Liyu England is designated as “CMYUK’s first UK agent”, representing both its production technology and materials portfolio. Following recent market shifts, Liyu England operates as an independent sales office led by Tucker, moving away from its previous role as the direct, exclusive distributor for Liyu hardware. This transition follows a recent decision by the manufacturer, Platinum Technologies LIYU, to establish a major UK distribution agreement with Soyang Europe. Because Tucker maintains longterm commercial relationships with an existing network of UK print shops that have invested in LIYU machinery, CMYUK’s new agency agreement allows them to effectively support and utilise those established client connections. The partnership aims to provide a stronger support proposition for these existing LIYU users and a clear route into wider production opportunities including finishing, automation, and digital textiles solutions, including the JWEI range of digital cutting and finishing equipment. Tucker has returned to his role as managing director following a period away from the business due to significant health challenges. CMYUK says that he has “returned with a more focused, sustainable model built around customer relationships, technical value, and long-term growth.” Robin East, group chief commercial officer of CMYUK, says: “Eddie is recognised as a highly committed, customer-orientated figure in the LIYU community. He knows the industry dynamics, he understands the equipment landscape, and the importance of helping businesses create efficient holistic production environments. This new agreement gives Eddie the platform to continue supporting that community, but now with the full backing of CMYUK behind him.” Under the new arrangement, Liyu England’s existing customer base will now have access to CMYUK’s wider infrastructure, including its demonstration facilities and technical support teams. Digital textiles from brands including UFABRIK will also be a key focus of the partnership. CMYUK colour specialists will work alongside Tucker to create dedicated UFABRIK colour profiles for LIYU users, with materials and printer settings tested for reliable and productive output. Training content and tutorial videos will also be developed around core LIYU textile applications, helping customers migrate towards new workflows. The deal adds patented extrusion technology and specialist engineering expertise to support Moss’ work in exhibitions, activations, and large-format branded environments. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. The companies have worked together for some time across a range of projects, with the acquisition seen as a natural fit to allow the combined, larger business to pursue new work and opportunities in various sectors. Sign Up Systems, which counts Jaguar Land Rover, Porsche, and Goodwood Festival of Speed among its previous clients, will rebrand as Moss as part of the deal. However, it will continue to operate from its Nottinghamshire facility, which includes in-house print and fabrication capabilities. Jon Bromhead, the founder of Sign Up Systems, will now retire from the business, with the senior team now reporting to Moss UK managing director, Michael Green. “Having worked alongside Jon and the team for the past 15 years, we have been constantly impressed with the company’s inventive, solution-focused ethos,” Green says, continuing: “Their deep knowledge of live events and structural applications has seen the development of extrusions that meet the rigorous demands of the sector, for example fast installation and durability in demanding environments.” Moss operates worldwide with operations in the US, Germany, Poland, Spain, and the UK as a division of US-based Vomela. Signs Express launches first conversion opportunity Signs Express has linked up with Clifford Wynn, owner of Quality Signs & Engraving, as he prepares to bring his long-established signage business to market in what the franchise business has billed as its first conversion opportunity. Quality Signs & Engraving has been trading successfully since 1997, but with Wynn planning his retirement, he had been seeking a way to ensure the business continues after he steps down. With this, Wynn is now working with Signs Express to support the promotion and potential sale of the business as a conversion opportunity upon a completion of sale. According to Signs Express, the model is designed to help established signage businesses planning for succession, sale, or future growth. Through the scheme, owners can work with Signs Express to transition their business into the franchise network, offering incoming buyers an established operation backed by the support and recognition of a national brand, subject to territory availability. 12 email: editor@signlink.co.uk Issue 266 - August | September SignLink SignLinkMagazine printmonthly_signlink KIT & CONSUMABLES | NEWS Fujifilm and Barberan preview ‘industry first’ digital varnish solution Print machinery manufacturers, Barberan and Fujifilm, have unveiled the next milestone in their strategic technology partnership, introducing a fully digital print solution to the single-pass Nautilus system, complete with an integrated digital varnish capability. The latest development, first previewed during a Barberan open day at the company’s headquarters in May, introduces an ‘industry-first’ fully digital UV printing solution that incorporates digital varnish directly into single-pass printing, eliminating the need for separate analogue varnishing processes. The technical preview of the technology is intended to gather direct market feedback from high-volume print providers, particularly those in the outof-home (OOH) advertising sector, from which Fujifilm and Barberan can finalise their commercial roadmap. Bringing single-pass technology into the graphics market presented two significant challenges for the manufacturers – supporting shorter production runs across a much broader range of media and overcoming the high-gloss finish traditionally associated with single-pass UV printing. Conventional solutions rely on analogue primers and matt varnishes, which can add complexity, increase make-ready times, and impact consumable costs. These approaches can also limit the ability to print onto thinner and more flexible substrates such as paper. To overcome these challenges, UK-based chemistry specialists at Kent-based Fujifilm Ink developed a new suite of UV inks engineered to deliver highquality print and broad substrate adhesion, reducing or eliminating the need for analogue primers. The result extends media flexibility, enabling printing onto thinner papers than many existing single-pass platforms can currently achieve. Through close collaboration with customers, Fujifilm Ink also developed a fully integrated digital varnish solution for singlepass UV printing which offers a satin finish. The technology was demonstrated publicly at FESPA 2026 in Barcelona through a number of printed displays and subsequently showcased to prospective customers during a dedicated open house event at Barberan. Markets that the technology may benefit include OOH advertising, where increasing demand for localised and targeted campaigns is driving the need for flexible, high-productivity print solutions. Where a fully digital infrastructure is not available, traditional alternatives often rely on slower multi-pass systems or printing with an analogue process. The Nautilus singlepass platform aims to change this dynamic, reportedly delivering more than 1,400 high-quality 2050 x 1600mm sheets per hour, with every sheet capable of carrying unique content. Combined with Barberan’s alignment conveyor technology, duplex printing can be achieved with a calculated registration accuracy of ±0.1mm. By Jonathan Pert Mutoh releases XpertJet 1681SR Pro Mutoh Europe has announced the launch of the XpertJet 1681SR Pro, a next-generation 64” eco-solvent roll-to-roll printer developed for professional sign and display production. Running at a top speed of 17sq m/hr, the new machine is supplied with Mutoh genuine MS51 ecosolvent inks in an eight-colour configuration, spanning CMYK, light cyan, light magenta, orange, and red. Among its key features is the AccuFine HD Pro print head, a single-head piezo system with 3,200 nozzles across eight channels. Mutoh says this is engineered for accurate droplet placement and detailed image reproduction, which when combined with its latest i-screen technology, the printer can support smoother gradations, controlled solid areas, and stable output over extended production runs. Other features of note include a three-way heater system and flat-type front dryer for stable ink reception and consistent drying, while Mutoh says a front-access ink system and internal LED lighting improve operator usability during set-up and continuous runs. Fujifilm and Barberan’s solution aims to remove the traditional high-gloss look of single-pass UV prints Nuneaton Signs scores VeloBlade hat-trick with Vivid Nuneaton Signs, a signage business that provides meaningful employment for people with disabilities, has invested in a third VeloBlade machine from Vivid Laminating Technologies. DIGITAL | NEWS 15 www.signlink.co.uk Issue 266 - August | September 2026 Giant curved LED wall to be installed in Leicester Square Ocean Outdoor has been appointed by London real estate company, Soho Estates, to manage its digital out-of-home (DOOH) assets in London’s Leicester Square, following a competitive tender. Under the terms of the longterm contract, a new curved LED wall measuring 166sq m will be installed this summer, which will be flanked by two existing portrait LED screens. The new DOOH landmark, measuring 240sq m in total, is part of long-term plans for the evolution and regeneration of Leicester Square, the traditional centre of London’s entertainment district. The LED wall will overlook the main pedestrian walkway leading into Leicester Square from the tube station entrance on Charing Cross Road. The screen will sit behind bespoke curved glazing, forming part of the building’s new facade. As part of Ocean’s contract, full motion and ‘3D DeepScreen’ content will be showcased on the wide-format screen to mark special events including film premieres, and cultural, community, and charity occasions. 3D DeepScreen, which Ocean spearheaded for the UK and Europe market, allows for highimpact, ‘naked-eye 3D’ OOH advertising that makes objects appear to break out of flat screens. Dubbed ‘The Curve’, the new DOOH feature is one of just two commercial advertising opportunities in Leicester Square, the other owned by Vue Cinema. Both are now managed by Ocean, forming part of its West End DOOH portfolio which includes Landsec’s Piccadilly Lights display and a wide-format screen in Carnaby Street. Nick Lawson, head of investment and development at Soho Estates, says: “Leicester Square has been the heart of London’s entertainment district for more than a century. “This investment will ensure it remains at the forefront of global media and cultural events, while providing a significant community benefit as a valuable platform for charities, artists, and local community organisations.” Chief executive officer of Ocean Outdoor UK, Nick Shaw, adds: “Our new partnership with Soho Estates is a superb addition to our West End DOOH portfolio. Leicester Square gives brands access to a lucrative vibrant global audience in a world famous cultural and visitor attraction, just a few minutes from Mayfair, Carnaby Street, and Soho, some the city’s premium retail districts.” The Manchester Screen expands with new outdoor advertising formats The Manchester Screen, the largest combined banner and digital billboard in the UK, has expanded its creative capabilities in order to reflect the changing landscape of outdoor advertising. The Manchester Screen has significantly evolved its offering over the past 12 months, expanding its physical activation space and developing a broader suite of creative formats that allow advertisers to combine digital content with large-scale physical installations. The Manchester landmark now offers advertisers a comprehensive out-of-home (OOH) advertising canvas that combines a fullmotion digital screen with more than 10,000sq m of activation space, wide-format banner wraps, rooftop activations, bespoke creative structures, and projection capabilities. According to Katie Smith, managing director of The Manchester Screen, the expansion reflects a wider transformation in the outdoor advertising industry, with OOH campaigns increasingly conceived as creative experiences rather than standalone advertising placements. Smith says: “The role of outdoor advertising has changed dramatically. This is reflected in the UK’s OOH revenue reaching a record £1.43bn in 2025, with further growth predicted this year. Significantly, its being driven by digital and by advertisers increasingly combining multiple outdoor formats and campaigns that dominate an entire location, in order to create social content and immersive experiences rather than a single billboard.” Smith believes that, while reach will always matter, today’s brands are looking for campaigns that people actively engage with. She continues: “A large amount of research now shows us that the moments consumers remember and therefore create brand loyalty are the ones where they experience the brand, and where they create an occasion to remember. “We’ve invested in creating a canvas that gives brands a far greater creative freedom. Instead of being confined to one advertising format, they can now transform an entire location to tell a much bigger story. That’s exactly what sits behind our ‘beyond the billboard’ philosophy and our promise to create without limits – giving people the freedom to imagine campaigns that simply wouldn’t have been possible before.” The investment has also been supported by the appointment of Ben Poulter as The Manchester Screen’s business director, who has been tasked with helping to maximise the awareness, understanding, and creative potential of the site. Poulter adds: “The conversations we’re having with agencies today are very different to those we were having just a few years ago. “Creative ambition has increased significantly. Brands are thinking much earlier about how outdoor media fits into wider campaigns, from PR and social media through to experiential activity. They’re asking how they can own a space rather than simply advertise within it.” The new screen is currently being installed in Leicester Square The Manchester Screen has hosted recent brand activations from the likes of Calvin Klein, O2, and Ninja Kitchen By Jonathan Pert By Jonathan Pert
18 email: editor@signlink.co.uk Issue 266 - August | September SignLink SignLinkMagazine printmonthly_signlink SOFTWARE | NEWS 85% of uploaded logos aren’t print-ready, new data shows FastEditor, a prepress automation specialist has released new platform data, quantifying how much customer artwork needs fixing before print production – and how autonomous workflows can close that gap. The software specialist recently analysed the logos being uploaded to its platform, in order to understand the quality of the uploads and how many of them are print-ready. Across 13,773 logo uploads on the FastEditor platform between November 2025 and May 2026, the company found that about 85% needed at least one automated fix before production. Most of the artwork analysed was not ready to print on arrival, with 79% needing upscaling, 61% needing vectorisation, and 40% needing background removal. Vectorization is seen by FastEditor as a core problem: the 61% of uploads previously mentioned are raster files that can’t be used for screen print, embroidery, or laser without conversion. A large percentage of the raw files being sent were also too ‘light’, with 79% of assessed raster uploads needing upscaling. FastEditor found that the median uploaded file size was around 0.6MB, which the company describes as “web-grade files that won’t hold up in print.” The software company argues that by utilising its automated prepress solution, the median time from upload to a production-ready file is just 53 seconds, versus up to 24 hours for a manual proof and around three working days to reach production in a traditional workflow. FastEditor is not alone in its mission to eliminate the manual file patching that has long plagued print shops, with the wider print industry rapidly shifting toward autonomous, touch-free workflows across the print process. This push toward touch-free operations is mirroring a broader trend across the sector. The Summer 2025 In-Plant Printing KPI Report by PRINTING United showed that 65.4% of in-house printing departments are actively pursuing equipment or workflow automation. Sign Trade Supplies unveils new 3D generator tool Sign Trade Supplies has added a 3D generator to its online KOPA configurator, providing signmakers with an immediate visual preview of any post-and-panel layout at the point of ordering. The generator sits inside the company’s existing Trade+ KOPA calculator with no separate software or login. As users configure panel size, post height, single or double-sided options, and finish, the preview updates alongside their choices. The new feature, which was developed from watching how customers use the KOPA configurator, aims to close the gap between specification and expectation at the earliest stage. KOPA is a modular aluminium post-and-panel system supplied in kit form, widely used for wayfinding projects across car parks, golf courses, council estates, and retail parks. Panels up to 2,400 x 1,200mm slot into powdercoated aluminium frames, finished in black, white, or Decro wood-effect profiles in teak or light oak, with concealed fixings throughout. Massive completes ‘Rainbow Row’ installation for London Marathon Massive, a provider of specialist services to mass participation charity and outdoor events, recently used Alumigraphics Grip from Soyang Europe to create a set of floor graphics for the 2026 TCS London Marathon. The 46th London Marathon took place on April 26th, with tens of thousands taking part in a race that spans London starting in Greenwich and finishing at The Mall. Located just after mile 21, the Rainbow Row area was a 250-metre stretch of the route created to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community and promote inclusivity. To fit in with this theme, Massive was tasked by Proud Events to produce floor graphics to mark the start and end of the Rainbow Row section. Ross Slaughter, production lead at Massive, says: “The initial conversation was to supply a larger floor graphic, but after various conversations with Proud Events and London Marathon Events we settled on two 5m x 2m graphics to ‘bookend’ the Rainbow Row area.” Working out of four offices across the UK, Massive operates primarily as an events delivery agency, with one arm of the business focusing on branding and wayfinding. The company has created and supplied materials to a host of clients including Formula 1 events in Belgium and Italy, as well as Pride in London. Given that the Rainbow Row graphics would be subject to the footfall of almost 60,000 runners on the day, as well as support services vehicles, Massive identified the need for a material that could withstand this impact while also not causing a trip hazard for competitors. The company selected Alumigraphics Grip for the project. A durable, foil-based floor covering, it has been designed for creative outdoor and indoor graphics, with its pressuresensitive adhesive designed for secure application to textured or smooth surfaces including concrete, asphalt, paving, brick, and stone. The material also features a slip-resistant textured surface, providing a safe walkway in hightraffic areas without the need for additional lamination. Massive printed the rainbowthemed graphics in-house on its HP Latex 360 before travelling to the Limehouse area of London to install the application ahead of the race. Slaughter adds: “Our client was very happy with the install; we have only had positive feedback from the organisers.” The graphics were part of a historic day for the TCS London Marathon, with new world records set in both the men’s and women’s races, as well as for the total number of finishers. Club captain Mickey Demetriou was scanned using an Artec Leo 3D Scanner from Europac 3D, first in the old shirt and then again in the new home kit. Files were then sent to Hybrid for production on the Mimaki 3DUJ-2207 3D printer at the company’s headquarters. The Mimaki system can reproduce more than 10 million colours. The finished result was a 20cm tall model of Demetriou, which formed the centrepiece of the launch video for the new shirt. The video followed the journey from scanning through to the finished print before revealing both player and model together. Next Generation is FESPA UK’s programme designed to support young people starting out in the print or signage industry by providing a network of likeminded individuals and mentors where they can learn, develop, and have a safe space to ask questions. The programme is open not only to FESPA UK members but to anyone aged 18 to 30 working in the print, signage, or graphics industry. Sarah Lees, who is head of marketing and communications at Business Compass Finance, has been involved with the initiative as an advocate since its early development, serving as a mentor from the very beginning of the Next Generation programme. Over the past four years, she has played a key role in supporting its growth, sharing her industry experience, and helping to inspire and guide emerging talent across the print, signage, and graphics sectors. In addition, Lees has acted as a mentor to Molly Jackson, the head of Next Generation and marketing manager at FESPA UK, working closely with her and the Next Generation committee throughout the evolution of the project. The new role for Lees reflects a more strategic and visible level of involvement, focused on strengthening engagement within the online community, raising awareness across the industry, and acting as a respected senior voice representing the programme. Speaking about Lees’ appointment, Lees says: “I’m excited and honestly quite humbled to have been asked to support the FESPA UK Next Generation community as an ambassador. “For me, it’s about encouraging and empowering young people within our industry to build strong networks, feel more visible, share ideas, and stay excited about a future in print, signage, and graphics.” FESPA mourns passing of ‘founding father’ FESPA has shared the sad news that Michel Caza, one of eight founding board members of the FESPA federation, has passed away at the age of 90. Caza helped establish FESPA in 1961, with the organisation growing to become one of the leading print federations in the world. Caza remained a FESPA board member until his retirement from the role in 2014. He also spent time as the organisation’s president from 1996 to 1999 and again from 2000 to 2002. Away from FESPA, Caza was a print business owner and prolific author of technical and art books and articles. Among these was ‘Screen Printing: A Guide for a Clean Planet’, which, published in 2001, was later extended to become the first ‘FESPA Planet Friendly Guide’.
